Pesky little critters

Doesn't seem to matter how careful we are these little gnat like creatures find their way into our kitchen no matter what.

There are as many 'homemade' remedies as their are fruit flies so I'll share a few of my favorites:

  1. Take a small bowl and put about 1/4" of cheap wine and a few drops of Dawn dish liquid into it. Leave on counter. The wine attracts them and they can't get out because of the dish soap and they drown. Vinegar will do the same thing as wine.
  2. Take a glass jar and put a piece of banana in it. Cover the top of the jar with plastic wrap, stretching it and holding it in place with a rubber band. Poke holes in the top with a toothpick. Fruit flies can get in the jar, but they can't get out.
  3. Take a narrow-necked bottle, such as a plastic soda bottle. Put a piece of banana peel inside. Leave it sit, or lie on its side, overnight. In the morning, close it with the lid and dispose of the bottle. Chances are that you'll have attracted hundreds of these pesky little critters overnight.
  4. Put a dish with some basil in it next to your fruit bowl or just sprinkle some basil on the fruit. Fruit flies don't like basil and will steer clear of your fruit bowl.

Another quick solution: Jack and Coke

It took 2 days to rid my kitchen 50+ fruit flies. I left my jack and coke in the kitchen for about 10 mins by accident while watching football. When i came back to get it i noticed there were 6 dead fruit flies in my cup.I put a small amount in 4 cups a spread them around my kitchen and took two days to kill about 50-60 fruit flies. Very effective

Thanks for these great tips! These things are such a nuisance! I have tried regular fly spray and it don't work, and I don't like to use the harsh chemicals-especially in the kitchen. Great hub!
