Instant Messages: IMVU
70What is IMVU
An instant messaging graphical program that boasts of more than one million users since its beta release in 2004. IMVU offers users a 3D graphical interface including avatars (the users' 3D image of themselves which is created by the user). IMVU allows you to interact with others and allows the members to develop content that can be sold to other users. It also shares many features with other ‘virtual worlds'. Chat rooms are ‘owned' by the user, and ‘chat bubbles' appear above the avatars when messaging in a chat room. What's interesting is that the avatars can move around the room and may be attached to furniture. Public rooms which have been introduced by IMVU have transformed IMVU into a more complex environment. Currently, membership at IMVU is free (allowing users to register with a screen name), and you can utilize the 3D Chat, purchase virtual content and customize your own homepage. Users who do not purchase full membership are denoted in the user name as "Guest". Members can purchase a number of added features including Age Verification, Access pass and a number of other features which allows them to access content that is not available to ‘guest' users. Like many other ‘online worlds' IMVU has their own credit system to allow members to purchase items for their avatar (furniture, pets, 3D scenes, clothing, etc.). Credits may also be earned by referring others and by participation. Members are allowed (through creation of their own content) to participate in the Content Creator Program which provides software utilities to create products which can be sold to other users through listings in an online catalog. Users can also resell credits they earn.
There are a number of third party websites that provide additional forums and resources to support those who are active in the IMVU communities, and most users devote time to content, product development (for the online catalog) and customization of home pages and chat rooms (public and private).
Like many other online communities there has been some controversies associated with IMVU including their use of ‘restricted' content title as many users though that this was adult content and purchased upgrades in their service to be able to access it - many credit card processing centers expressed concern and therefore IMVU now states that they do not allow adult content - their content is limited to what would be allowed in an R rated movie. There are still many users who are upset over this as they felt this content was and should be continued to be allowed since they went through credit card and age verification processes to allow this content. IMVU has a strict form of age verification; they now use a third party verification company which they do not disclose to their members. Some members feel they have a right to know since they are providing personal information to an unknown 3rd party. Age verification does remain voluntary (and is fee based) - and is not required for use of services.
